Ian Roller

Ian Roller is a Los Angeles native Producer, Composer, Musical Director and multi-instrumentalist with a love for music that has been clear since before the age of 2. It was then that Ian began banging on pots and pans while singing along to his favorite Beatles tunes. The son of an avid music lover, his mother turned him on to all kinds of styles of music, eventually signed him up for private instruction on piano, guitar, bass, and eventually the saxophone.

Starting on the saxophone in middle school with classical training, Ian made the leap in high school to join the jazz band at the prestigious Hamilton Music Academy. It was here that he was also given opportunity to learn the flute, clarinet and bass clarinet to perform in pit orchestras for musicals. And, having the good fortune of finding Ben Wendel as a private instructor in 10th grade, Ian began to explore the possibilities of harmony and improvisation. This journey continued under the tutelage of Rob Lockart from Ian’s senior year of high school through college.

A few months after graduating from college in 2011, Ian co-founded an 18-piece big band, the Late Night Jazz Orchestra (LNJO), with the intention of giving post-collegiate jazz musicians (himself included) a chance to continue honing their skills in a big band format with people in a similar age group.

Meanwhile, at 21 years of age, Ian began immersing himself in various local creative music scenes, obsessively seeking out new sources of inspiration which expanded well beyond the jazz scene into r&b, funk, soul, rock, pop and more. One thing that particularly struck him along the way was the chemistry of the West Coast Get Down (Kamasi Washington, Miles Mosley etc.) many of whom turned out to be Hamilton alums who had grown up together. Observing the undeniable chemistry of these old friends playing each others’ compositions to raging crowds at The Piano Bar in Hollywood (prior to their rise to global prominence), in 2015 Ian founded GENR8R with childhood friend Gabriel Steiner. Pronounced “generator” this band remains actively making people dance wherever they go, while working on their second album.

In 2016, Ian started recording himself on Garageband, and in 2017 began releasing collaborations with Elusive. Since that time, Ian has graduated from Garageband, contributed to eight Elusive albums (with more on the way in 2024 including their first ever collaborative EP).

Ian’s experience leading different types of bands has naturally led to opportunities in Musical Direction. In addition to directing a big band for Mr. Carmack’s 2019 Immersion Tour, he has newly been appointed MD for prominent Armenian band Reincarnation Orchestra. A born leader and connector, Ian’s magnetic personality has brought together countless musicians and creatives.

Since the pandemic, like many musicians, Ian veered heavily towards honing his production and composition skills. This has led him to a multitude of collaborations at his home studio – officially dubbed Roller Coaster Studios (RCS) in 2023 – including his first Grammy nominated work in 2023 as Saxophonist and Engineer on Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical courtesy of Austin Wintory, as well as remote recordings for Disney, Portugal. the Man, Yung Gravy, The Pocket Queen, Elusive, Adam Deitch, Stones Throw artists Stimulator Jones, Silas Short and Michi Guerrero, Drugdealer, AJ McLean of The Backstreet Boys and many more. Ian has also had opportunities to work with/for countless other notable artists onstage and in studio, including Stevie Wonder, Bryson Tiller, Chloe Bailey, Mon Laferte, DJ Quik, Josef Leimberg, Taylor Graves, Thundercat, etc…

Ian’s infectious passion for music continues to grow in ambition and in demand, guiding him through this world with a sense of purpose – using his unique skill set to bring people together through music
